Tweet When an employee returns from any extended leave of absence (major illness, military service, a stint with another employer, or even a long vacation), the transition can sometimes be rough. Take these steps to welcome your employees back and get them up to speed again quickly:
• Sit down for a talk. Before jumping back into workplace issues, spend some time just talking with the employee about his or her absence. Don’t pry, but do express interest in what happened and how he or she feels today. This is your chance to show support, reconnect with your employee, and build your relationship.
• Remind the employee of his or her role. Re-examine what the employee contributes to your organization. After a long time away, some employees may not remember every detail. Even if they do, reiterating the value of their contribution will help them engage with their duties again.
• Hold a “welcome back” event. You don’t have to stage a huge party, but don’t let the returning employee slip back unnoticed. Send an email, hold a meeting, bring in snacks or lunch, or just do something to let the rest of your workforce know that their colleague is back and ready to work.
