Expand reference checks for a truer pictureBefore deciding to nix a candidate based on one poor reference, cast your net a little wider... By Motivational Manager | Posted: June 27, 2013 DataSource: The requested DataSource 5f4ce871-9abc-4ec7-89fd-43fb6c737f57 is not accessible.
Tweet You’ve checked with a job candidate’s former employer and gotten a bad vibe. Should you scratch that candidate from your list? Not necessarily. The problem could be a simple personality conflict—some people are like oil and water, and they just don’t mix. Or perhaps the former employer feels betrayed because an employee left. Before deciding to nix a candidate based on one poor reference, cast your net a little wider. Request some additional references from the candidate and compare them to what you’ve learned so far. If you detect a pattern, you may not want to hire the person. But if only one previous manager gives a negative reference, consider discounting the source and moving forward with your hiring plans.
